Our history

CPG was founded in 2019 by a team of farming experts and investors. With a proven track record of commercial success in eastern Europe and over 20 years’ experience in regenerative potato farming, we’re a trusted partner to some of eastern Europe’s biggest potato buyers.

We grow and produce the highest quality potato-based products in Ukraine with the goal of supplying these to the global market.

The investments we make in our people, equipment and technology allow us to move forward with confidence as a business built for the future.

1994

Our CEO, Mark Laird and his brother, Simon, launched their first operation in the North of Poland with a 50 hectare site, supplying Pepsico, before raising private equity and eventually growing to a 12,000 hectare operation.

2006

Due to the quality of its soil, the business expanded to Ukraine and started farming with 250 hectares, growing a variety of crops including 100 hectares of potatoes, cereals, rapeseed and sugar beet.

2011

An IPO listing followed 5 years later with the company farming over 15,000 hectares and delivering £7m EBITDA. New investors included Blackrock, F&C, Artemis and Zurich Asset Management.

2013

2 years later, the business had grown to 28,000 hectares and was sold to a Saudi Arabian government consortium providing IPO investors with a 70% gain (and a 300% – 2,000%+ premium to earlier private equity investors). One of the first ever profitable investor exits for a western owned, listed, major Ukraine agricultural operation.

2014-18

Our management ran the business for another 4 years on behalf of the consortium expanding to 200,000 hectares before parting amicably in early 2019.

2019

Taking the vast learnings from the previous 25 years, we decided to set up CPG with a refocused strategy to produce core farming feedstocks and process these into high-quality, zero waste plant-based starch and proteins to feed growing global demand.

2020

In year 1, we planted 500 hectares of potatoes, built 13,000 tonnes of specialist warehousing, harvested over 15,000t of potatoes, generating over £3m in revenue and almost £300k of net profit. The first step in our strategy towards creating an integrated zero-waste bio-economy.

2021

Commissioned our state of the art 23,000 tonne potato store, this store is a unique asset in Ukraine, a fully ventilated and refrigerated store at scale on our 9.2 hectare base outside Lviv.

2022

Successfully opened the new starch production plant near Lviv. This 15 tonnes per hour facility is built with market leading scandinavian technology and has been designed to grow with the company.

2023

Completed the first phase of our biopolymer innovation roadmap, we successfully developed recipes for Thermoplastic Starch granulate and Thermoplastic Starch blends for film and injection molding applications.

Launched our Biopolymer Innovation Hub in the UK, this facility represents a circa $500,000 facility designed to develop future biopolymers with CPG’s starch feedstock.
