July 2023 – Bio-fertiliser & the carbon-neutral potato
In line with our company’s goals of circularity and clean energy, CPG is working to produce the first carbon-neutral potato in Ukraine, producing a renewable, sustainable, and circular feedstock for our customers and starch plant. 55 percent of a potato crop’s carbon footprint is from cultivating land and applying mineral fertilisers. CPG’s regenerative approach to potato farming in Ukraine is already minimising cultivation with new technology, the next step is to use the bio-fertilisers created as a waste to the starch production process to reduce the impact on climate change even further.
We are conducting far reaching biofertiliser trials on over 50 hectares of potatoes, these trials are being monitored and supported by Dr Keith Dawson and Vincent Gillingham. We are assessing different treatment rates of potato juice in field trials across our new land at Hlyniany.
We hope the results of this trial will enable us to reduce or remove the need for mineral fertilisers on our potato crops, creating a truly circular farming system.
